Making solid contributions to some of legendary Hall of Fame Coach George Bossi’s strongest teams during the early 1970’s, Nick Lakin earns his place in the Hall of Fame with distinction and honor.
Breaking into an impressive varsity lineup as a sophomore (1970-1971), Nick compiled an individual record of 14-7-1 as the Red and Gray won the Massachusetts State Championship.
As a junior (1971-1972) Nick enjoyed a breakout season. En route to an overall individual record of26-4, Nick was Northeast Sectional runner up before winning an Ind ividual Masssachusetts State Championship at 135 pounds. He concluded his successful campaign with a runner-up finish in the New England High School Championship Meet.
Nick finished his high school career as a senior (1972-1973) as a key member of one of the greatest teams in the storied history of the Lowell High School Wrestling program. Recording an individual record of 29-3, Nick was an important component of an undefeated (16-0) dual meet team. One of the highlights of his dual meet season was a tense battle in a showdown meet against arch-rival Chelmsford in the CHS gym before more than 1200 fans. In a battle of two undefeated wrestlers, Nick courageously rallied from a 5-3 deficit after two periods to eke out a 9-7 victory that helped ensure Lowell’s 34-21 win. Nick continued his success in the post-season. He was Northeast Sectional Champion and finished as runner-up in the Massachusetts State Championship Meet. He concluded his high school career by placing 2nd once again at the New England High School Championship Meet. Nick’s individual successes were part of a larger picture, as the Lowell team swept Northeast Sectional Massachusetts State, and New England Team Championships.
After graduation Nick continued his education at Massachusetts Maritime Academy (class of 1977). Nick also continued his wrestling career, which was highlighted by his 3rd place finish at the 1974 New England Collegiate Championship Meet in 1974.
In addition to Coach George Bossi, Nick joins a host of Lowell High School Wrestlers in the Hall of Fame, including his teammates from the 1973 State and New England Championship team–Jeff Lambert, Brian Dillon, Max Desilets, and George Kacavas.
