A member of a well-known Lowell athletic family, Peter Martin etched a significant place for himself in the athletic histories of both Lowell High School and Trinity College.

As a Quarterback for Coaches Ray Riddick and Walter Nelson, Peter totaled 17 touchdown passes during the 1976–1977 seasons, including a memorable 4-TD, 300+ Yard performance to spark the Raiders to a 40–27 upset over the Central Mass Power, Leominster. Peter was a Division I Boston Globe All-Star selection during the 1977 season.

As a catcher for baseball coaches Mike Skaff and George Cunha, Peter was a rare three-year starter at catcher, providing leadership to the Red and Gray, as well as a career .360 batting average and 37 RBI.

Upon graduation, Peter attended Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. As Quarterback for the Bantams Football Team, Peter led Trinity to the New England Division Ill Championship in 1980 while leading Division Ill in total offense. He culminated his football career in dramatic fashion. After being sidelined with a broken jaw for virtually his entire senior year, Peter come off the bench in the waning moments of the final game of his career, throwing a touchdown pass to defeat Wesleyan 25–24.

Peter was also a baseball standout for Trinity. Team MVP for 1980, 1981, and 1982, Peter had a career batting average of .368. He achieved numerous All-New England Honors and was named 3rd Team All-American in 1980.

Loving family man and friend to many

LOWELL — Peter F. Martin, 55 of Lowell died on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital. He was surrounded by his family.

Peter was born, lived, and died in Lowell. He was the son of Rodger F. Martin of Lowell and the late Katherine (Bailey) Martin of Lowell.

Peter was educated in the Lowell public schools, graduating with honors from Lowell High School in 1978. He led his football and baseball teams as a quarterback and catcher and was elected to the LHS Athletics Hall of Fame. He continued to Trinity College, where he majored in economics and excelled on the football and baseball fields, including being honored as an All-American in baseball. Later in his career he returned to school, completing the Harvard University’s Advanced Management Program in 2002.

Peter started his career at a young age and took great pride in his professional growth. He worked hard, thrived on challenges, and was a natural-born leader who cared deeply about the colleagues who worked for and with him. In a three-decade career, he worked for Procter & Gamble, Gallo Wine, Brachs, Welch’s, The Beacon Group and Xenith. He was most proud of his tenure with Welch’s, where he spent the majority of his career across the sales, marketing, and operations departments and advanced to the executive level.

He was a beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many. Peter was devoted to his family and he was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved, telling stories, cooking, and filling his home with laughter. He was incredibly generous and was always the first to step forward in a crisis.

Peter is survived by his wife of 34 years, high school sweetheart, and best friend, Lainey (Neylon) Martin, and his four children and their spouses: Peter and Andrea Martin of Lowell, Kara and Jason Koch of Media, PA, James Martin of Lowell, and Robert Martin and Brittany Descoteaux of Chelmsford. He was also the proud grandfather of Hazel Koch of Media, PA, and Jack Martin of Lowell. He treasured every minute that he had with each of them. He was the youngest of seven children and is survived by Rodger and Linda Martin of Southbury CT, Kathy and Forrest Whitaker of Lake Forest, IL, Brian and Elise Martin of Lowell, Elizabeth and Kerry McNamara of Osterville, MA and David and Melissa Martin of York, Maine. His brother James Martin of Lowell predeceased him in 1995.

Peter had a special relationship with his mother-in-law, Mary Neylon of Lowell. His father-in-law Thomas Neylon predeceased him in 2006. He is also survived by Cathi and Mark O’Malley of Lowell, Tom and Jennifer Neylon of Manhasset, NY, Frank and Kathy Neylon of Chelmsford, and Mo Neylon and Ted McNamara of Chicago.

Peter came from a large family and had many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins that he cared deeply about.

His family loves him, misses him, and will always be incredibly proud of the strongest man they ever knew.

MARTIN — In Lowell, July 11, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital, Peter F. Martin, 55, the beloved husband of Lainey (Neylon) Martin. Family and friends may call at the FAY McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 105 MOORE STREET, LOWELL on THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015 from 4 until 8 PM.

Peter’s Funeral will begin on FRIDAY MORNING at 8:30 AM from the Funeral Home, followed by his FUNERAL MASS at 10 AM at ST. MARGARET’S CHURCH, 374 Stevens St., Lowell. Burial will follow in the Lowell Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s name may be made to the Lowell High School Scholarship Fund, c/o LHS – Bursar, 50 Fr.
